3. Gameplay

The Game is a sorting puzzle in which your objective is to clear all goods from a fixed arrangement of shelves by grouping matching items onto the same shelf. Each level presents a procedurally generated board of shelves, each holding a number of slots that may increase as you progress, some of which contain stacks of goods with additional items hidden behind the visible front.

You interact with the Game by tapping a good to select it, then tapping an empty slot on a different shelf to move it there. A good may only be moved to a shelf other than the one it currently occupies, and only into an empty slot. Certain goods, marked with a small lock icon, may only be moved between shelves on their own side of the board and can never cross to the other side. A smaller number of goods, marked with a distinct icon, cannot be moved at all and remain on their starting shelf until enough matching goods are brought to them to complete that shelf. When every slot on a shelf holds goods of the same type, that shelf clears automatically. Clearing a shelf may reveal previously hidden goods and trigger cascading clears. A level is completed only when every good has been cleared from the board.

Each level is governed by a countdown timer. Every second that passes reduces the remaining time by one. Moving a good to an illegal destination — an empty slot on the same shelf, an attempt to move a locked good across to the other side of the board, or any attempt to move an immovable good — incurs an immediate time penalty that compounds with each consecutive mistake. A limited number of undos are available per level, and each level also imposes a limit on the total number of moves available. If the timer reaches zero, the level ends in failure. A level also ends in failure if the board becomes fully occupied with no matching shelf available, or if the move limit is reached before the board is cleared, in either case rendering further progress impossible.

By playing, you acknowledge that the complexity of Shelf Out — including the restriction that goods may only move to a different shelf, the inability of certain marked goods to ever cross to the other side of the board, the complete immobility of a smaller number of other marked goods, the concealment of stacked goods until the front is cleared, the compounding time penalty for illegal moves, the limited number of undos and total moves per level, the increase in shelf size and matching requirement at deeper levels, the possibility of jamming the board through careless play, and the pursuit of efficient solutions across a near-infinite level space — is an intentional part of the Game's design and core experience.
